Autumn Lawn Care

Seeding a lawn is a crucial step for a healthy and lush garden. When applied correctly, lawn seeding not only adds aesthetic value to your garden but also helps you establish a long-lasting green space. In this guide, you’ll find detailed information on how to seed grass, how to plant grass seeds, and essential lawn care tips.

We’ve listed the essential autumn lawn care tasks (September–October–November) for you below:

Tasks for September

Continue regular mowing and watering. On rainy days, don’t forget to turn off your irrigation system. With increased rainfall, you may notice pests like snails, slugs, and worms more frequently in your garden. You can use pest control treatments for these.
September is the ideal month for lawn seeding. If your lawn has sparse areas, first rake out the yellowed grass and then apply seed. Continue pest and disease control. You can apply ammonium nitrate fertilizer once this month. If there’s moss in your lawn, ammonium sulfate fertilizer can be used.

Tasks for October

The first two weeks of October are your last chance to seed a new lawn. Apply ammonium nitrate once. If moss is present, you may use ammonium sulfate. Remove fallen leaves regularly—use a leaf blower or a garden rake. Continue mowing based on your lawn’s growth rate.

Tasks for November

Continue mowing depending on grass growth. Keep removing fallen leaves regularly.

Autumn Lawn Seeding & Overseeding

Autumn Lawn Seeding:
Prepare the soil to a depth of 15–20 cm, depending on its structure. Spread 50–60 g of grass seed per square meter evenly (6 or 7-species blends are recommended). Cover with 1–1.5 cm of topsoil. Use a roller to compact and level the surface. Finally, water thoroughly.

Overseeding:
Use a rake to remove debris, yellowed, and dried grass from the existing lawn. Aerate the roots. Apply seed to bare or thin patches. Cover with 1–1.5 cm of topsoil, level it with a roller, and water evenly.

Recommended Grass Types for Autumn Lawn Care

  • Lolium (Perennial Ryegrass): A cool-season species, commonly used in lawns. Short-lived perennial. Needs care in hot climates.

  • Poa Pratensis: Thrives in cool, moist conditions. Requires heavy watering but is drought-tolerant.

  • Poa: Not tolerant to drought or heat. Has a fine texture and low foot traffic resistance.

  • Festuca (Fescue): With about 100 species, this temperate grass is ideal for high-traffic areas. Very durable and comfortable to walk on.

  • Agrostis (Bentgrass): Mostly found in parks and sports fields. Known for its dense growth and fine leaves.

  • Cynodon Dactylon (Bermuda Grass): Fast-spreading, fine-textured grass. Tolerant of drought, heat, and mild cold. Loses color in winter but regains it in spring.

  • Cynodon Transvaalensis (African Bermuda): Recently popular for its dense, fine texture and resilience to drought, heat, and cold. Durable under foot traffic.

  • Zoysia (Korean/Japanese Grass): Grows densely and low. High quality but slow-growing. Hard leaves make mowing difficult.

  • Loretta: Thick texture, heat-tolerant, and resilient—ideal for walking.

Renew Your Worn-Out Lawn During Autumn

We all dream of a deep green, dense lawn where we can walk barefoot and feel the grass under our feet. But what if your lawn—planted with high hopes in spring—is starting to pale and thin, exposing soil beneath?

There could be many reasons:
After a summer of fluctuating humidity and extreme weather, expecting your lawn to stay perfectly healthy is unrealistic. However, with the right fertilizers, fungicide treatments, and supplements, it’s possible to help your grass survive these challenges.

If you’re planning to seed in September, the choice of grass seed is crucial. Select a variety suitable for your climate. For the Marmara region, opt for thick-textured, heat- and humidity-tolerant species.

September is the best time for new lawn seeding, overseeding, and autumn care applications. You can completely renew your old lawn or patch up sparse areas. Remember—even the best-maintained lawns need to be fully renewed every 8–9 years.

So, how about working with a professional team today to rejuvenate your garden?
